Description:  Switzerland's BLS AG offers rail-auto service through the Loetschberg Tunnel, the trip taking about 20 minutes to complete. Electric 165 sits with its train at the southern end while it boards cars for the next run north to Kandersteg.

Loetschberg Tunnel Entrance
Title:  Loetschberg Tunnel Entrance
Description:  The southern portal for the Loetschberg Tunnel in Switzerland. The nine-mile bore was opened in 1913 and continues in use today. It's now partially replaced by a much longer 21 mile Loetschberg Base Tunnel opened in 2007 and located 1300' beneath this one.

Description:  Don't have a road between two valleys in the Alps? The Swiss operate a train between Goppenstein and Kandersteg that solves the problem. We're boarding the train; you just drive on, pull up as far as possible and ride the train. It takes about 20 minutes to make the trip.

Description:  It's about 6PM on a Friday afternoon as trains meet in Lauterbrunnen, Switzerland. The train on the left is a Wengernalp set that has come down the mountain from Wengen. The one on the right is with the Bernese Oberland Rwy and will soon depart for Interlaken. During the height of the summer tourist season this meet is repeated every thirty minutes.

Climbing Towards Wengen
Title:  Climbing Towards Wengen
Description:  A Wengernalp Bahn (WAB) rack train climbs the hill into Wengen having come up from Lauterbrunnen. The WAB opened in the 1890s and operates 19KM (12MI) of 2'7.5" narrow gauge track up to, and past, Kleine Scheidegg at the base of the Eiger. Although a major tourist attraction, the railroad is also a lifeline to Wengen, which limits auto traffic. Jungfrau Mountain sits majestically in the background.

Description:  A Bernese Oberland Rwy train arrives the mountain town of Lauterbrunnen late on a summer afternoon. The road primarily runs a meter-gauge 12KM line from Interlaken to Lauterbrunnen with frequent passenger service. It uses standard adhesion traction as well as rack assist where necessary due to grades. 312 was built in 1986.
