Short Grain Train near Goondah
Title:  Short Grain Train near Goondah
Description:  While some major roads in the US won't even look at a grain train with less than 100 cars, short trains are common in Australia. This 20-hopper effort originated in Harden and is on its way to export behind the normal pair of 81-class units.

Up and Down
Title:  Up and Down
Description:  The Sydney to Melbourne Main South features an undulating profile through a good portion of its path with grades up to 2.5% frequently encountered. This "up" (towards Sydney, eastbound in this case) container train is climbing a long stretch of 1.5% between Goondah and Bowning. Original English-influenced clearances on this line (particularly numerous stone road overpasses) limit trains to single-stack only.

Empty Grain at Biscuit Bridge
Title:  Empty Grain at Biscuit Bridge
Description:  The usual pair of 81-class units bring their empty grain train downgrade near "Biscuit Bridge" in the Cullerins on the South Main. As a local explained to me several years ago the structure, which carries the Old Hume Highway over the tracks, had a truck loaded with biscuits (cookies to us in the US) go out of control and end up on the tracks, closing the line for a period. It's been "Biscuit Bridge" ever since.

A Change of Names
Title:  A Change of Names
Description:  QR National recently changed its name to Aurizon, as in "Australian Horizon", which means it needs to re-mark all of its fleet. DC2206 wears the later QRN "Pineapple" scheme and is trailed by a pair of L-class units with an empty grain train approaching Sullivan's Bridge near Cullerin.

Pacific National Grain climbing at Cullerin
Title:  Pacific National Grain climbing at Cullerin
Description:  PNA usually assigns a pair of 81-class units to its loaded grain trains that come out of Australia's Riverina region and head to export facilities at Sydney or Port Kembla. L-class unit L251 leading this train is a nice change; it was built in 1967 for the Western Australia RY and is, functionally, an EMD SD40 internally.

Wallaby Darned
Title:  Wallaby Darned
Description:  Well, its probably a Kangaroo, but I couldn't resist the title. A 'Roo sits by the tracks in downtown Cowra NSW. I caught him pensively considering his future; he ended up bounding right up the hill seconds after I shot the picture. There was another Kangaroo feeding in a park only about three blocks away but he seemed less interested in trains. The tracks belong to the Lachlan Valley Ry, a heritage group which operates the former NSW RY line.

Description:  Greentrains RL306; one of ten built at Islington Shops, South Australia in 2007; power is an EMD 16-645 cranking out about 3800HP. To American eyes an odd looking unit, there is no rear access and what appears to be a mid-body door does not have an access ladder.

422 and 442
Title:  422 and 442
Description:  A pair of late-60s era Australian boxcabs at the Goulburn NSW depot- externally alike but very different inside. 42202 is a Clyde/GM deliveried to the NSW Ry in 1969 with 2000HP- mechanically it's similar to a US SD38. Only 20 were built-It wears an Aurizon patch over its previous scheme. Behind is QUBE 442 class unit 44202, originally delivered to NSW RY from Goodwin in 1969 as a class of 40 with an ALCO 251 prime-mover cranking out 2150HP. Getting these two units together defies the odds; Aurizon has only a pair of 422-class left; QUBE owns only one 442.

The Sydney Monorail Nears its End
Title:  The Sydney Monorail Nears its End
Description:  The Sydney Monorail was opened in 1988 as a 2.2 mile (3.6KM) circle connecting the central business district with the newly re-developed Darling Harbour tourist area. Eight stations are operated and the trains make a counter-clock-wise cycle on their 25-year old line. The Monorail will be closed in June 2013 and dismantled due to age, limited route and expansion of a modern light rail system. This train is shown as it approaches the Harbourside station.
