Annie Local Headed West |
Description: |
A classic northwest 'sunbreak' bathes BNSF's Anacortes Local as it heads west out of Burlington on an otherwise rainy day. While a trio of four-axle units is not unusual on this run, today's consist of GP40X 3034, GP60B 336 and GP40M 3009 certainly is. The Anacortes Local typically operates six days a week from Mt Vernon/Burlington out to the refinery complex at March's Point, serving industries along the way. |

Three QR National CLF-class Clyde/EMDs haul a container train eastward near Gunning. These beauties were built from 1970 with 3200HP; they are the last units built new with the classic EMD "Bulldog" styling. Their rare appearance as a trio on the Sydney line apparently caused quite a stir among Australian railfans this morning. |

GE/ALCO/EMD Power Climbing Morrison's Hill |
Description: |
An "Up" train is headed east out of Cootamundra while it works 17KM (10.5 miles) of roughly 1.3% grade to Morrison's Hill. The wide variety of power found in Australia is demonstrated in this picture; up front is GL-class unit GL-106, which was built as a 442-class with an Alco prime mover and subsequently re-built with a 3000HP GE engine. The second unit is 869, a 40+ year-old Goodwin/Alco DL-531, (South Australia RY 830-class) a roughly 1000HP unit still earning its keep. Last is an RL-class unit, built in 2005 with a 3500HP EMD 645 power plant. GL-106 is painted for lessor CFCL-A while the two trailers are in Coote Industrial green and yellow. |

Throttle Up at Miley |
Description: |
Monday morning on the Hampton & Branchville. Four GP9s have picked up a unit coal train from the CSX at Hampton and are taking it to the power plant at Canadys. The quartet of Geeps certainly sound healthy- to paraphrase what the crossing guard told me "they aren't much to look at, but they run great". The road's shop is located behind the train. I note where this shot has been nicked and placed on a web page under another person's photo credit. |

Climbing St. Charles Bridge |
Description: |
Eastbound NS train no.285 crosses Missouri Route 94 as it climbs the St.Charles Bridge over the Missouri River. While the power is largely unremarkable, the bridge was opened in 1936 and is rated at 7876 feet in length, with multiple deck girder approaches between an impressive canitlevered through-truss center section. Look closely at the mid span here and you might be able to faintly make out "WABA.." from its days with the Wabash RR. |

Strangers in a Strange Land |
Description: |
A pair of big NS units work a ballast train on the Cimarron Valley RY, a rather mundane assignment a long way from their home road. As Tim H points out in the comments, this is part of a state-funded effort to upgrade the CVO tracks in order to keep grain on the rails and off the roads. How two NS units ended up on this assignment beats me. NS 2593, an SD70M-2, trails. |

UP Southbound |
Description: |
Sunset at UP's Joso Bridge over the Snake River. C30-7 2429 leads an SD40-2 southbound, headed for Hinkle OR. This shot was taken from the State Park next to the bridge- the photographer and his photo partner, Charlie "Dr. Lego" Walsh, were parked in an RV, burning meat with beer in the cooler and enjoying the evening when the train reported itself on the radio. The picture was the easy part. |
