Description:  BN GP9 1968 runs a train of four hoppers and a caboose northbound near East Leavenworth. The boiler-equipped Geep used to power secondary passenger trains on the Burlington Route. It's now hauling ballast and has only about three years left on the road.

Annie Local Headed West
Title:  Annie Local Headed West
Description:  A classic northwest 'sunbreak' bathes BNSF's Anacortes Local as it heads west out of Burlington on an otherwise rainy day. While a trio of four-axle units is not unusual on this run, today's consist of GP40X 3034, GP60B 336 and GP40M 3009 certainly is. The Anacortes Local typically operates six days a week from Mt Vernon/Burlington out to the refinery complex at March's Point, serving industries along the way.

All Ahead One Third
Title:  All Ahead One Third
Description:  The Navy branch out of NAS Whiting Field ran about eight miles of track to the L&N connection at Milton FL. Here their 65 ton GE approaches the junction with two empty fuel cars. As the tracks show, the line wasn't operating very often at this point. It was abandoned in the early '80s and eventually became a rail-trail.

Covered Wagons Eastward
Title:  Covered Wagons Eastward
Description:  Three QR National CLF-class Clyde/EMDs haul a container train eastward near Gunning. These beauties were built from 1970 with 3200HP; they are the last units built new with the classic EMD "Bulldog" styling. Their rare appearance as a trio on the Sydney line apparently caused quite a stir among Australian railfans this morning.

GE/ALCO/EMD Power Climbing Morrison's Hill
Title:  GE/ALCO/EMD Power Climbing Morrison's Hill
Description:  An "Up" train is headed east out of Cootamundra while it works 17KM (10.5 miles) of roughly 1.3% grade to Morrison's Hill. The wide variety of power found in Australia is demonstrated in this picture; up front is GL-class unit GL-106, which was built as a 442-class with an Alco prime mover and subsequently re-built with a 3000HP GE engine. The second unit is 869, a 40+ year-old Goodwin/Alco DL-531, (South Australia RY 830-class) a roughly 1000HP unit still earning its keep. Last is an RL-class unit, built in 2005 with a 3500HP EMD 645 power plant. GL-106 is painted for lessor CFCL-A while the two trailers are in Coote Industrial green and yellow.

Throttle Up at Miley
Title:  Throttle Up at Miley
Description:  Monday morning on the Hampton & Branchville. Four GP9s have picked up a unit coal train from the CSX at Hampton and are taking it to the power plant at Canadys. The quartet of Geeps certainly sound healthy- to paraphrase what the crossing guard told me "they aren't much to look at, but they run great". The road's shop is located behind the train.

Description:  Rock Island GP40 384 is prepared to take the SP's Alamogordo (NM) local south to El Paso in September 1973. Seven boxcars and an SP caboose make up the entire train today. Traffic was mostly for a wood mill in town along with the occasional car dropped off for the Air Force.

Climbing St. Charles Bridge
Title:  Climbing St. Charles Bridge
Description:  Eastbound NS train no.285 crosses Missouri Route 94 as it climbs the St.Charles Bridge over the Missouri River. While the power is largely unremarkable, the bridge was opened in 1936 and is rated at 7876 feet in length, with multiple deck girder approaches between an impressive canitlevered through-truss center section. Look closely at the mid span here and you might be able to faintly make out "WABA.." from its days with the Wabash RR.

Strangers in a Strange Land
Title:  Strangers in a Strange Land
Description:  A pair of big NS units work a ballast train on the Cimarron Valley RY, a rather mundane assignment a long way from their home road. As Tim H points out in the comments, this is part of a state-funded effort to upgrade the CVO tracks in order to keep grain on the rails and off the roads. How two NS units ended up on this assignment beats me. NS 2593, an SD70M-2, trails.

Start-up Power for the Chicago, Missouri & Western
Title:  Start-up Power for the Chicago, Missouri & Western
Description:  Sixteen UP, former WP, GP40s from the WP group 3528-3544, sit off the KCS in Kansas City in February 1987. UP sent them back to their owner, GATX, who in turn leased them to the new CMNW. As shown they wear a mix of WP and UP numbers and are painted either UP yellow (680), four in primer brown or still in WP green. UP 681, the former WP 3533, became CMNW 3016 and later moved to the Gateway Western with the same number.

The Western Star arrives at Grand Forks depot
Title:  The Western Star arrives at Grand Forks depot
Description:  GN train 28, the eastbound Western Star, arrives at Grand Forks depot on 5 Feb 1970; if on schedule it's about 1110 in GFND. The Star is led by an SDP45 and two F-units, which were pretty much normal power east of Havre Montana at this time. Once the BN merger was consumated Burlington Route E-units became standard through here, usually with an ex-GN F3 or F7B in the middle. The train has come from Seattle and, when done at the downtown depot, will back out just over 2.5 miles to the wye at PA Jct before turning south and heading for Fargo, Minneapolis and points east. Scanned from an Instamatic print.

BN Annie Local crossing the Swinomish
Title:  BN Annie Local crossing the Swinomish
Description:  BN's Anacortes Local crosses the Swinomish Channel west of Whitney WA on a beautiful September day. The train is headed west towards the refineries on March's Point that represent the majority of traffic on the line. The bridge is normally kept open for marine traffic and is closed only for the twice daily passage of the train, which normaly ran six days a week. The current span was placed in 1953, replacing a 60 year old predecessor. This view is to the north and was taken from the adjacent WA20 structure.

UP Southbound
Title:  UP Southbound
Description:  Sunset at UP's Joso Bridge over the Snake River. C30-7 2429 leads an SD40-2 southbound, headed for Hinkle OR. This shot was taken from the State Park next to the bridge- the photographer and his photo partner, Charlie "Dr. Lego" Walsh, were parked in an RV, burning meat with beer in the cooler and enjoying the evening when the train reported itself on the radio. The picture was the easy part.
