This is the view from the Nugget Hotel/Casino in Sparks NV; whose southern-facing rooms overlook the former SP yard in town. The AC44 in the background (5562) is switching while 5579 in the foreground has just led ten sisters over Donner Pass as a light movement. They've been tied down for the night and the crew is waiting for the bus to take them to the yard office. Never mind you're on the wrong side of the sun for great pictures, it's still a pretty good place to watch trains from. In four hours UP moved 10 trains, including Amtrak with 33 units, two of which were still DRGW black. All this in an air-conditioned room on a 92deg day. |

The former RI/ATSF line between St Joseph and Atchison was washed out at Winthrop MO by a flood in 2011. As of 2012 the line is still out of service. See Zach Pumphrey's shots of this same location to see what nature did to it. UP 5652 sits with an empty coal train during more normal times. The tracks to the right are what's left of the old BN/CB&Q branch from Armour, which was abandoned about 1991. |
