M&B crossing the Tombigbee-1 |
Description: |
The Meridian & Bigbee runs east out of its Meridian MS home about 51 miles to a connection with the L&N at Myrtlewood Alabama. At milepost 46 it passes through Naheola AL and then crosses the Tombigbee River over a dual-use bridge. Here the daily freight is shown approaching the east end of the structure behind the usual two Geeps. Note the 10 ton bridge limit- which applies to wheel traffic and not the railroad. The red light signal is for road traffic. |

The short life of the LTCO |
Description: |
When the N&W filed to abandon their line from Moberly to Des Moines in 1993, the Thomas Hill Power Plant was faced with a possible loss of rail service. The Bevier & Southern had already quit and the NW had the only active rail line to the plant, via a branch from Excello. The Lakeside Transportation Company (LTCO) took over, hauling coal from Moberly to Thomas Hill, leasing four ex CR and B&M GP38s and a quartet of former IAIS (ICG) GP10s. The operation only lasted for ten months, Dec 1993 to Oct 1994, while the BN laid tracks over the old BVS roadbed. LTCO ceased ops on 2 Oct 94 and sent its units elsewhere. These are the last two units on the road, being repainted at Excello prior to movement. The short NW/WAB branch west was subsequently pulled up, as was the rest of the Des Moines line. |

EMD Frame Number |
Description: |
The frame number EMD stamped in the front right/left rear corners of most new locomotives they built. Frequently covered by tape or paint, they are not always easy to see; in this case another railfan appears to have cleaned it off on an earlier visit. This one marks 5359-12, Frontier Grain GP10 471, the ex CC 1759, ICG 8059, IC 9059, now an elevator locomotive in Mead NE. |

Storage Line at SEMO Port |
Description: |
A line of MRIX Geeps sit at SEMO Port on a Friday morning. While 8300 carries the road's red/blue colors, four others (8331, 8320, 8354, 8350) retain PAL silver and 4119 still has CNW paint. Although 8300 has seen recent use the other five geeps have been sidelined at SEMO Port for several years. |
