MKT GP39-2 380 |
Description: |
MKT GP39-2 380. A former Kennecott Copper unit built with high cab, which was lowered to normal position prior to sale to the Katy; note the darker paint behind the cab where the original steps were. It's still in KCC yellow and wears a very small OKKT herald below the cab. |

Katy grain |
Description: |
In the summer of 1988 business allowed me to make my third annual "last chance to shoot Katy" trip; this time I went to central Texas, where I found this train, pulling grain south at Elgin Tx, a point on the MKT main due east of Austin. The lead unit is one of the former Kennecott GP39-2s. It was about this time my companion told me I was standing on a fire ant mound- but that's another story. |

Annie Local at Whitney |
Description: |
BN GP39-2 2704 runs long-hood forward as it brings the Anacortes Local through Whitney Wa early in 1974. In the '80s it was frequently a 1 or 2-unit train; since then several more industries have popped up on the line and it now typically uses 3 or 4 locomotives for its Monday through Saturday work. I've always liked this shot; with the low light and engineer in the cab window. |

Making the Curve at Burlington |
Description: |
A southbound potash extra negotiates the turn at Fairhaven and Cherry in downtown Burlington WA as it comes off the old GN line from Sedro Woolley to the main in October 1991. The train had been picked up from the CP at the border and featured the rare use of B-units on the Sumas line. GP39-2 2735 leads GEs 428 and 4111 with GP39M 2875 trailing. |
