Over Washington: Mansfield |
Description: |
This is Mansfield, Washington; located in Douglas County, and, up to 1985, the end of a 61-mile branch from the main at the Columbia River. The line was famed for its light rail and late use of 40' boxcars to haul grain. This view looks to the northeast; the rails entered town from the southwest and ran along Railroad Stree past the two grain elevators to the south-oriented wye near the end of the tracks. The town's small airport was located close-by as well. |

Over Washington: Centerville |
Description: |
This is Centerville WA, population about 120, located in Klickitat County. It was milepost 35.3 on the BN (SP&S) Goldendale Branch. This view, looking to the southeast, shows the Klickitat Valley Grain Grower's elevator as well as the other trappings of a small town of this region- a few houses, a church and the school. This line was actually abandoned in 1992, two years before the picture was taken, but it still shows the path the rails took through town. Goldendale, the end of the branch, is just over 6 miles to the east. |
