Up on blocks
Title:  Up on blocks
Description:  Number 5 was bought by Oregon's Valley & Siletz RR in 1954; the road was abandoned in stages through Dec 1984, when it was sold to the Willamette Valley RR. The 70T sits on blocks at the former V&S shop at Independence after what was left of the road had supposedly been completely shut down.

Paired 70 Tonners
Title:  Paired 70 Tonners
Description:  The Sisseton Southern RR (SSOR) operated the former Milwaukee Road line between Sisseton and Milbank SD from 1987 to 1989. Their two GE 70 tonners were sitting in the Dakota Southern's Chamberlain SD yard in July 1993. 75 was originally built for Iowa's Charles City Western and then worked for the Mariana & Blountstown in Florida before ending up in the Dakotas. The large, obviously homebuilt plow is a nice touch.

Derelict 70T
Title:  Derelict 70T
Description:  Laurinburg Southern's small yard in its name town is full of old and derelict small diesel locomotives, including EMD SW1s, Alco S2s and 70 tonners. This GE, which appears to be LRS 103, is a prime example of the assortment, most of which are in various stages of oxidation.

GE 70 tonners at Laurinburg
Title:  GE 70 tonners at Laurinburg
Description:  GE's 70 ton switcher seems a perfect match for southern shortlines. These two are out of service on the LRS and would need quite a bit of work to operate again. The lead unit, lettered for the associated Red Springs & Northern, would appear to be number 104.

ASARCO GE 70T
Title:  ASARCO GE 70T
Description:  Asarco Mexicana GE 70T 1956 is a former SP unit (5114), that went to National Metals before being repainted in this vermillion scheme and sent south. For whatever reason the unit was refused by the smelting outfit and it remained at SP's El Paso yard for a short stay until being sold to the M&ET, where it joined that road's stable of like locomotives as their 606.
