Description:  A pair of Queensland Rail units (2392, 2359) move a 'down' empty coal train back towards the coal fields. Both still wear the QR's "Bronco" paint scheme. The tracks to the left hed for the large Acacia Ridge yard and connection with the standard gauge mainline to New South Wales. The tracks to the right run to Clarinda and towards western Queensland; wheat, cattle and coal country.

Description:  The 1720-class is a do-everything unit for Queensland Rail. Over the years they've pulled commuters, mainline freight, branchline trains and are still found as trailing units on mainline passenger trains as well as used as shunters. 56 of the units were built by Clyde/GM between 1966 and 1970; they carry an EMD 8-645 engine and generate 1000 HP on C-C narrow-gauge trucks. 1732D is shown as the second-unit on the Sunlander as it departs Brisbane.

Description:  A Pacific National-Queensland container train runs northbound through downtown Brisbane, bound for Cairns. The unit is a Downer EDI rail PN-class; a 3300HP locomotive with an EMD 12-710 engine as its heart. PNQ owns 13 of the class; when built they were described (along with QR's similar 4000-class) as 'the most powerful narrow gauge diesels in the world".

QR Clyde GM 2320
Title:  QR Clyde GM 2320
Description:  QR 2320, a Clyde/GM locomotive on 3'6" narrow gauge. The heart of QR's diesel fleet is made up of a series of similar units delivered by Clyde from the early 1970s and spread through several different classes that differ in terms of weight and engines. All carry EMD 645 series prime movers offering roughly 1600 to 2400 HP depending on the class; All have been upgraded over the years with modified cabs, appliances and, in some cases, new motors. The 2300-class was modified by QR's Redbank shops from a mid-70s era 2400-class unit with a 2300 HP turbocharged 12-645 replacing a normally aspirated version.

Description:  Queensland Rail's electric-powered Tilt Train pulls away from Roma Street Station after completing its run from Rockhampton. The train set is on its way to the passenger yard for servicing. The road operates a pair of these Hitachi-built sets; their top speed is 100MPH (160KPH) and they make the daily 396 mile run to/from Rockhampton in about 7 1/2 hours.

Description:  Two 2300-class units bring an eastbound coal train through Calvert, Queensland in the dead of winter. (well, winter down here at least!) These narrow-gauge units are late-'90s rebuilds of earlier designs and now carry 2250HP turbocharged EMD 12-645 engines. Although the leading black/yellow scheme is newer than the trailing maroon/yellow paint, it was itself recently replaced by a new QRN's bright yellow motif.

Description:  1720-class 1749 is the second unit in an empty cattle train running through downtown Brisbane in the rain. Its paint has been modified with the Aurizon logo over its old Queensland Rail paint. Clyde/GM built 56 of these light (62 ton), 1000HP, six-axle locomotives from 1966. Roughly 20 remain in service in early 2013.

Description:  Queensland RY 4-6-2 1089 (Walkers, 1958) pulls a load of people out of Roma Street station for a roughly 90 minute trip around Brisbane. The locomotive was one of 55 BB18 1/4 class locomotives delivered from 1950 to 58. The class lasted through the end of steam on the Queensland RY narrow gauge in 1970. 1089 is one of the survivors and is still used for periodic heritage train operations.

Description:  Queensland RY 1262, a 1961-build English Electric of Australia model MCH193C. On display with a destination board for Pinkenba on the nose. The sides of the unit are opened to show the mechanical innards at the excellent Workshops Museum in Ipswich. 17 of these roughly 1500HP units were built; they lasted in service through about 1990.

Title:  The Sunlander at Bundaberg
Description:  QR's northbound Sunlander makes a stop at Bundaberg late on a fall afternoon. Behind the two Clyde/GM units is 17 cars, including seven sleepers. The train operates up Queensland's east coast from Brisbane to Cairns with cars dating from the '50s. It's due to be replaced by improved Tilt Train service over through 2014. The area around Bundaberg is full of sugar cane; the town itself is famed for Bundaberg Rum.
